Mar 11, 2016- Saraswoti Tharu, a freed Kamlari (former indentured girl child labourer) runs a mobile eatery in Nepalgunj, earning more than Rs3,000 daily.
“Besides supporting my family, I also spent some of my income for the education of my children,” she said.
Another former Kamlari, Pradarsani Tharu of Kanchanpur, who spent her childhood working for others as a labourer, has been able to establish herself as an entrepreneur. “Now, my life has become relatively better,” she said. “I earn Rs1,500 daily by operating the eatery, which is enough to run my family.”
Free Kamlaris, who did not receive education during their childhood, are becoming independent.
“I spent my entire childhood as a bonded labourer. When I grew up, I was married,” said Santoshi Chaudhary, who also runs a similar business.
“Due to the lack of education, I did not get jobs. But now, my life has changed,” she said, adding she earns Rs1,200 daily. “Today, I earn and spend myself.”
Nepal Youth Foundation, an organisation working for the rights of former bonded labourers, has been supporting them with various self-employment programmes.
Dil Kumari Chaudhary, chairman of the foundation, said it organises various training programmes to educate former Kamlaris to make them independent. “We have targeted to make all former Kamlaris self-employed,” she said, adding neatly 12,700 Kamlaris have been in Banke, Bardia, Dang, Kanchanpur and Kailali.
