UCPN (Maoist) lawmaker Lama remanded in five-day custody

Mar 13, 2016- UCPN (Maoist) lawmaker Lyarkal Lama, who was arrested earlier in the day after 14 bullets were recovered from his bank locker, has been remanded in five-day custody.

The Kathmandu District Court issued the remand order on Sunday.

The Commission for the Investigation of Authority (CIAA) arrested him and handed over to the police after finding the ammunition from his locker at Durbarmarg-based Nepal Investment Bank. The anti-graft body had been investigating him for accumulating property disproportionate to his known source of income.

According to Chief of Metropolitan Police Range, Teku, SSP Bikram Singh Thapa, Lama has been charged with Arms and Ammunition Possession Act.
Thapa said Lama has lockers in other banks as well and police have been looking into them.

Lama, a former CPN-UML member, was a State Finance Minister in Jhala Nath Khanal’s Cabinet. He had to resign from his state minister post following controversy over his citizenship certificate. He then quit UML and joined UCPN (Maoist), which appointed him as lawmaker despite some strong resistance from the party.
